This is the sixth in a series about how to STOP letting anxiety and negative thoughts control and ruin your life.
Sometimes, our anxiety and negative thoughts are the “Spirit” trying to connect with us or send us a message.
This is my sixth in a series about how to stop letting anxiety and negative thoughts ruin your life.
This is something I struggled with for many years, so it’s a topic I’m intimately familiar with.
I talked in the first couple weeks about your thoughts and talk and how the words we say can affect our anxiety and negative thinking.
Over the past three weeks, I have been diving into the topic of self-love and how we can do a better job at loving ourselves so our anxiety and negative thinking won’t get the best of us.
This is the last of the videos about self-love and how to make sure we are bringing our full selves to the world we live in.
This Week’s Topic
I mentioned in the beginning that sometimes our anxiety and negative thinking is a result of the Spirit trying to get in touch with us, trying to communicate with us, trying to tell us something.
I had an experience just like this not very long ago, at the end of 2019.
I suddenly began to experience a lot of anxiety and negative thinking, overwhelming thoughts of death. It felt very out-of-body for me because it wasn’t something I had been accustomed to experiencing for a while.
I was struggling with suicidal thoughts and thoughts of a total loss of overall hope but I didn’t understand where it came from.
Fortunately, I tapped into my network, resources and the system I use to stay connected, and it worked, I got through.
What I figured out later was the Spirit was trying to send me some messages, and that’s why I was feeling those things.
You might remember that a few months after that, a pandemic hit the world, and it seems I was feeling something related to that.

I’m not trying to tell you that you also are a blossoming mystic like myself or that you have messages that you need to share with the world or anything like that, but what I am saying is that here we are on this earth and we are energy, right?
What is “Spirit”?
The Law of Thermodynamics tells us that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change form. All of earth and the universe that we know of is made of atoms, which are made of subatomic particles that move at different frequencies – i.e. we are all made of the same energetic matter. From a scientific standpoint, we are energy and we emit and interact with measurable frequencies.
To simplify this principle, I like to compare our existence on earth to a lava lamp.
The lava lamp is God/the universe, and we’re all part of it.
Some of us are the water that the blobs are floating through and some of us are the blobs that are floating through the water, but you’ll notice that every time the blobs float up, they break into different sizes, sink, then come up again, break into different sizes, sink, and come up again, over and over and over.
The blobs change their form, size, how they look, how they move, et cetera, but they’re all coming from the same stuff inside the same lava lamp.
Our existence on this planet earth is a very similar thing.
We are all connected to one another, we’re all part of the whole, we’re all part of nature, and all of that is God. We may “die” and “be born” but in actuality, our energy has just changed form. Some believe we just change into dirt which feeds plants, which feeds nature, which feeds humanity, etc and others believe we take on new human or other forms. I’m not trying to debate the specifics, but when we think about our time alive on this earth this way, it may change how we approach some things.
I know, I may be challenging some of your theistic beliefs, and I apologize if I am, that’s not my intention.
My intention is to open up our minds to the possibility that God is everywhere around us and all in and through us.
As a part of God in nature, you are an integral piece of the pie and everybody that you’re around is also an integral piece of that pie and all of the people and all of the nature that you’re around is a part of God – the whole pie.
So, bear with me, the Spirit wants to be connected to you, but the Spirit IS connected to you. You really have no way around that.
What I’m talking about now is being open and able to connect with and hear what the Spirit tells you.
For my Atheist Friends
Now, I get that this video might also be a little tough for my friends in the atheistic community, and I apologize.
My background is Christianity, that’s the language and bias that I come from.
Please know that I honor and respect your interaction in this as an atheist, and I will work to get better language for how this applies to you.
Ultimately, the point is that I’m connected to you, you’re connected to me, we are part of nature and earth together, and we all matter.
Now that you know that “Spirit” is all in and through you, all in and through everything that you interact with, including maybe your church or your temple or your bowling team or your neighborhood group or your family, how can you get more connected to Spirit so that you can get relief from the anxiety and negative thoughts?
Get Quiet
The first thing I want you to do is to get quiet.
Just get quiet.
This is a really hard activity in today’s day and age.
With all the devastating news, a pandemic and all the scary things happening, it’s very hard to get quiet, but it’s the first and most important part of how to connect with Spirit.
I am a fan of using tools to help us accomplish things, so I highly recommend the Calm app, or brain.fm, they have guided meditations and frequencies that can help you get into a relaxed or meditative state of mind.
You may also consider closing doors, taking alone time, and literally just being quiet, but if it’s very hard for you to close your mind down, I highly recommend doing meditation with the Calm app.
Other ways that you can get quiet are:
- Nature Walks
- Yoga class
- Working Out
- Prayer Closet (listening, not talking)
- Meditation
- Silent Retreat
Get Connected
Once you get quiet, then you can get connected.
When I say get connected, this is a very intentional and personal process.
It might have to do with researching the historical roots of your lineage, ancestry, family of origin, or current community, especially with regard to religion or connecting to Spirit.
Ask yourself: What are the ways that your people have connected to Spirit in the past?
If you find that you get enhanced by the Spirit from being with other people, then do that.
Find your people, reach out, talk to them, spend time with those that lift you up and encourage you to be your best.
If that means getting involved in your local church or temple, do that. It could be a business group, a gardening group, a gaming group, or anything that is important to your life and so you can share that connection with others of like minds.
One of my favorite groups is Startup Life Support, a group of business owners who support each other through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
So, if you want to connect with Spirit, you’ve got to get quiet and then get connected to those people and things that are around you naturally.
They’re around you for a reason, your sphere of influence is around you for a reason.
It IS simplistic to say one can connect to spirit just by getting quiet and connected, but the point is that you are a part of the divine of this whole planet.
Spirit exists because YOU exist.
All you really need to do is tie into the network that “Spirit” has already developed for you – in your friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, church, garden group, bowling team, running team, et cetera. Tie into those people because they are there on purpose to be your network of support and strength when you’re going through difficult stuff.
The beautiful thing is that the “Spirit” doesn’t only exist in people, but also in every single part of the nature that you move in. Spirit is your favorite hiking spot, your garden, the feral kittens born in your back yard, the octopus you encountered on a scuba trip, the car accident you were involved in, the devastating loss you experienced, the trauma you went through, and the emotions and desires you feel all along the way.
This feels like I’ve tried to simplify the Encyclopedia Britannica or Google down into a 5 minute read, but I hope you’re following and getting ideas of ways you can begin to intentionally get quiet and get connected to the spirit that is all around you. As you begin to listen more closely to your surroundings, I’d love to hear what types of messages you hear. It’s hilarious to me when the message comes from a commercial I’ve heard a thousand times or a billboard I’ve never noticed before. I can’t wait to hear where you find yours!
