10HOPE
I maintain or find hope, even when it is not easy.
Say it out loud. Say it until it’s true.
Where are you right now?
HOPE has a range. Most people move across it throughout their lives.
Resigned / Pessimisti
Optimistically Expectant
When HOPE needs attention
Expecting things to go wrong has become familiar, which is its own kind of exhaustion. You are doing the right things and putting in the work but it’s hard not to wonder why it seems to work out for everyone else and not for you. The future feels closed rather than open. Staying engaged takes more than it gives back.
When HOPE is strong:
There is no doubt the best outcomes are coming. It’s just a matter of timing and having the right people to share the journey with. You hold your goals lightly enough to stay flexible and firmly enough to keep moving. You are optimistically expectant not because everything is going well but because you have done enough work on yourself to trust what you are becoming.
Moving back toward the struggling side is not failure. That is the practice. The declaration exists for exactly those moments.
HOPE is not wishful thinking. It is what happens when you have done the work.
Hope is the most misunderstood word in the framework. Most people treat it as a starting point – something you either feel or not, something you have when times are good, hold onto when things get hard, and lose when they get harder. The Hart Habits treat it as an outcome. Something you arrive at and exist in at all times by working the other nine Habits consistently over time.
You cannot manufacture hope. You cannot talk yourself into it when the foundation is not there. And real life will shake even the strongest foundation. But when you know yourself, when you can see clearly and trust your inner voice, when you have directed your thoughts, communiczated intentionally, made your vision visible, protected what matters, and kept showing up, hope is what is left. Not as a feeling. As a posture. A disciplined, practiced, earned way of standing in the world regardless of what the world is doing.
That is what optimistically expectant means. Not that everything will be fine. But that you have enough evidence of your own capacity and enough trust in the process to stay open to what is coming next.
Hope is also where the journey shifts. The first nine Habits are largely internal work. Hope is where that work becomes distinctly external. It is cultivated in community, with people whose goals and values align with yours. You do not sustain hope alone. We sustain it together.
HOPE is the tenth Habit because it depends on all nine that came before it. It is not the starting point. It is the result. Your Goals come from SELF and SHOW. Your Pathways come from TRUTH and TALK. Your Internal Agency comes from THOUGHTS, TALK, and ENDURE. And your External Agency is strengthened by the healthy relationships you cultivate through TRUST, TALK, NON-VERBALS, and PROTECT. Every Habit feeds this one. And HOPE renews them all in return.
GOALS
Hope without direction is just wishing. Your goals – the ones you documented in SHOW, the ones you have been taking small steps toward in ENDURE – are what give hope something to attach to. When you can point to a specific future you are building toward, hope has an address. It is not floating. It is aimed.
PATHWAYS
Knowing where you want to go is not enough. HOPE requires being able to see at least one realistic path to get there. Not a guaranteed path. Not a perfect one. Just a plausible route that you can actually walk. When the path feels completely blocked from every direction, hope collapses. Part of practicing HOPE is staying curious about pathways even when the obvious ones have closed. And sometimes the pathway you cannot see alone is visible to someone walking alongside you. Community is not just support. It is often the source of the next step forward.
AGENCY
Hope requires believing that what you do matters and that what we do together matters even more. Internal agency is your actions influencing your outcomes. External agency is recognizing that you’re not doing it alone. The people around you, the community you’re part of, the collective effort of people around you – all of it compounds. Hope held together is more sustainable than hope held alone. You are not building this just for yourself.
